Fire Chief is a "Survivor" in More Ways Than One
Last year, David Traiforos, Chief of the Franklin Park Fire Department, Franklin Park, IL, decided it was time to get healthy. When he submitted to a series of health tests common to men over 50, a heart scan revealed that his aortic valve had deteriorated so severely that it needed to be replaced. Of greater concern was a very large aneurysm (the weakening of a blood vessel) on his aorta near his heart.
David immediately underwent surgery to repair the aneurysm and implant a mechanical aortic valve at Loyola University Health System in suburban Chicago. Two months after his surgery, he was back at work, a true survivor considering that the aneurysm could have ruptured from something as simple as a sneeze or a cough, according to his doctors.
Chief Traiforos also is a survivor thanks to his favorite Streamlight® right-angle flashlight, the Streamlight Survivor® LED, which he always keeps clipped to his turnout gear. "I'm the type of chief who still goes to fires, and I'm never without my Survivor flashlight," he said. "I call it my guiding light." His team members also carry Survivors, and the department's fire trucks and other vehicles are stocked with a variety of other Streamlight lanterns and flashlights.
"I've always used Streamlight lights because they're well made, they're dependable and they work," said Traiforos.
"I guess I got a second chance on life," he added. And, he'll continue to count on his "guiding light" to help light his way. |

Lighting the Way Through Northern IRAQ
… and on to Afghanistan
I just got back from yet another trip on the road, this time to northern Iraq. For the last 340+ days, your Stylus Pro® LED pen light has been tucked into my ankle pocket, providing instant access. I can't tell you how many times I've used it, but I can tell you that it's been so often that I successfully lost the clip it came with and have worn through the rubber coating over the button that turns it on and off. Thanks for such an awesome and reliable light. Power generation is still a huge challenge here, so having light at my fingertips was invaluable. I'll keep it in my pack for my next trip to Afghanistan, probably around next summer. Keep throwing the right kind of products out there, they're worth it.

I lost my Strion® LED in deep,
muddy waters;
but it wasn't lost
for good.
Upon starting my career as a Trooper, I purchased a Streamlight® Strion® LED rechargeable flashlight. Being "the rookie," I started out working midnight and evening shifts, where my safety was dependent on my Streamlight. Recently, I have been working day shifts where my Streamlight is not used as often, but it is still an essential tool on my belt.
On 3/31/10 I was dispatched to an accident where an SUV was hit by a Tractor Trailer and sent rolling down a 40-50 foot embankment, where it was upside down in approximately four feet of water. Without a second thought, three Troopers and myself jumped into the frigid waters to remove the vehicle's operator, who had been under water for almost five minutes. We were able to remove her from the vehicle and get her to dry ground. She was unconscious and not breathing. Performing CPR, we were able to revive the female operator, who was transported to the hospital. I also climbed on to the top of the overturned vehicle and searched the vehicle for any other passengers. I found only a cold, wet, and shaking cat, which was rescued without incident.
While searching the vehicle, I heard a small splash in the water below me, which I later discovered was my Strion LED flashlight. I was upset that I had lost my flashlight in the deep muddy waters. This morning I received a phone call from a fellow Trooper who said that Dept. of Transportation returned to the site of the accident to clean up the debris. The waters had receded by this time. A DOT employee found my flashlight, pointing straight up in the mud and still on. My Streamlight had been submerged in muddy waters for almost 24 hours.
The durability of my Streamlight is unthinkable, and I could not be happier with my decision to purchase it. Thank you for designing a light, compact, and undoubtedly durable flashlight. I know that I am safe in any conditions as long as my Streamlight is at my side.
Sincerely,
Trooper Michael Prescott—CSP
